                                 Think you can get away with using e-mail and the Internet in violation of company policy? Think again.
A new survey found that more than a quarter of employers have firedworkers for misusing e-mail and one third have fired workers formisusing the Internet on the job. The study, conducted by the American Management Association (AMA) and The ePolicy Institute, surveyed 304 U.S. companies of all sizes.
The vast majority of bosses who fired workers for Internet misuse -- 84percent -- said the employee was accessing porn or other inappropriatecontent. While looking at inappropriate content is an obvious no-no oncompany time, simply surfing the Web led to a surprising number offirings. As many as 34 percent of managers in the study said they letgo of workers for excessive personal use of the Internet, according tothe survey.
Among managers who fired workers for e-mailmisuse, 64 percent did so because the employee violated company policyand 62 percent said the workers' e-mail contained inappropriate oroffensive language. More than a quarter of bosses said they firedworkers for excessive personal use of e-mail and 22 percent said theirworkers were fired for breaching confidentiality rules in e-mail.
Companies are worried about the inappropriate use of the Internet, andso 66 percent of those in the study said they monitor Internetconnections. As many as 65 percent of them use software to blockinappropriate Web sites. Eighteen percent of the companies block URLsto prevent workers from visiting external blogs.
Companies usedifferent methods to monitor workers' computers, with 45 percent ofthose participating in the survey tracking content, keystrokes and timespent at the keyboard. An additional 43 percent store and reviewcomputer files. Twelve percent monitor blogs to track content about thecompany and 10 percent monitor social-networking sites.
Companies are keen to track employee e-mail and Internet behavior inpart due to legal fears. According to research done by the AMA andePolicy in 2006, 24 percent of companies in the study had e-mailsubpoenaed by courts and another 15 percent have faced lawsuits basedon employee e-mails.
The researchers found that even thoughonly two states require companies to notify their workers that they'remonitoring them, most tell employees of their monitoring activities. Ofthe companies that monitor workers in the survey, 83 percent said theytell employees that they are monitoring content, keystrokes and timespent at the keyboard. As many as 84 percent tell employees that theyreview computer activity and 71 percent alert workers that they monitortheir e-mails.

因为不当使用邮件而解雇员工的雇主中间,有64%认为员工的做法违反了公司规定,而在62%认为邮件包含不适当的、或者是冒犯性的语言.超过四分之一的老板解雇员工的原因是利用邮件处理个人事务,而22%的老板称,被解雇的员工使用邮件时违反了公司保密规定.

员工不适当的使用互联网是公司的一大顾虑,66%的被调查者表示他们对公司的互联网数据进行监控.其中有65%使用软件封闭它们认为不适当的网站,有18%采取封闭URL地址的方法,阻止员工访问外部博客网站.

公司监管员工的方法也是五花八门,其中有45%的被调查公司采用了内容追踪、键盘监控及键盘时间监控等方法;有43%采取存储中查看电脑临时上网文件的方法;12%的公司监控员工的博客,查看是否存在与公司相关的内容;10%的公司监控社交网站.

调查还发现,尽管美国只有两个州立法规定,公司必须向员工告知被监控的事实,但事实上绝大多数公司都这么做了.被调查者中有84%称他们向员工说明了被监控的事实.
